5. Feature Extraction and Application
GPSVisionTM is designed to collect features from the real world for real-world applications. After data collection in the field, the stereo images, GPS and INS data are processed together at an office PC workstation. Every image pair is tagged with its position and rotation in a global coordinate system and is used for extracting useful information. The data is then ready for digitizing.
Lambda Tech’s Feature Extraction Software is executable on either Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is driven by an external rule base and is language neutral. The user interacts with the software by pointing at features of interest seen in the stereo image pairs. The software then triangulates the relative position of the selected feature and transfers it into the global coordinate system. The features can be positioned to within one meter or less of their actual location.
In addition to calculating locations, Feature Extraction Software provides the ability to select, control and display the images. A separate map window displays the tracking of the GPSVisionTM system, the image location and the extracted features. An image pair is selected from the map window or by a forward/backward menu function that "drives" the operator down the street. The image pairs can be viewed in the user-defined zoom mode and its contrast can be adjusted easily. The user simply selects the desired features on one of the stereo images, assigns attributes to them, then moves on to the next image pair. The software performs the sophisticated routines of measuring each image coordinate, the global coordinate and the distance measurement. Feature Extraction Software is fast, powerful and intuitive. It offers a recognizable Windows interface, and the technique dramatically reduces feature extraction time.
After the feature extraction is completed, a standard output file is created containing all feature information about the collected data. The re-formatting software, included with Feature Extraction Software, can process the standardized output files to create input files for a targeted AM/FM or GIS system.
